As we hit the halfway point of the year, rumors about the new Google Pixel handset, dubbed the "Pixel 5a," have started to circulate. From the Android 12 Preview builds, we've heard a lot about Google's next handset.

From new models to features in the next quarterly Pixel Feature Drop, Android's Developer Preview and Beta versions have long been a source of insight about what's coming next for Google's Pixel phones. The Android 12 Developer Preview builds have been no exception, revealing a wealth of new information, including several tidbits about the upcoming Pixel phones, such as the Pixel 5a.

We've gathered some of the smaller specifics about the next Pixel phone that have surfaced as a result of the Android 12 Developer Preview, and we'll keep this space updated as more information becomes available.

Google “Pixel 5a”

The most important bit of information to emerge from the Android 12 Developer Preview era is that Google's next mid-year phone will indeed be dubbed the "Pixel 5a." The information was obtained from cstark27 (H/T Mishaal Rahman), a well-known Google Camera modder and Android group member, and tested by our own Dylan Roussel.

  • Pixel 5a:GR0M2
  • Pixel 4a (5G):G025I
  • Pixel 5:GTT9Q8

The name "Pixel 5a" has been speculated about for a long time, and was also listed in the Android Open Source Project almost a year ago. This latest mention of the name in the Android 12 Developer Preview gives us renewed faith in Google's upcoming Pixel application branding.

4/26 update: Google has confirmed that their new phone will be named the "Pixel 5a 5G" after it was found in the Android 12 Developer Preview.

Number of the model

In addition to confirming the name "Pixel 5a," the same source also offers the device's model code, "GR0M2." According to what we can tell, this is the Pixel 5a's "international" model number, not the one we'll see on boxes in the US, since it appears alongside two other international model numbers.

Mukul Sharma discovered that the GR0M2 model number of the Pixel 5a has recently been through the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a regulatory body close to the FCC in the US, as a side note to this model number that isn't specifically relevant to Android 12. With this certification, the Pixel 5a is one step closer to being a reality. In contrast, the Pixel 4a was approved by the BIS two months before it arrived in the United States and four months before it was released in India.

Update 4/26: Despite the phone being approved in India, Google has announced that the Pixel 5a 5G would initially only be available in the United States and Japan.

the codename

Although the Pixel 5a was codenamed "Barbette" in the leaked internal document we posted last year, our Dylan Roussel discovered in the first Android 12 Developer Preview build that the proper codename is "Barbet." Unlike “barbette,” “barbet” is a kind of fish, which suits the Pixel codename theme better.

Our APK Insight team's investigation of version 8.2 of the Google Camera app has since verified this corrected "barbet" codename for the Pixel 5a.

New in DP3 is the Snapdragon chip

Although the big news surrounding the Pixel 6 this fall is that it will be powered by Google's Whitechapel GS101 chip, it appears that the Pixel 5a will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip — and a well-known one at that! Files in Android 12 Developer Preview 3 point to the Pixel 5a 5G running on the Snapdragon 765G, also known as the “sm7250,” as discovered by our Dylan Roussel.
